The First Presbyterian Church on the Park is offering a “Kid’s Art Academy,” which will take place at the church on Tuesdays and Saturdays during two sessions during the months of January, February and March 2012, for the purpose of providing kids the opportunity and access to a variety of artistic pursuits, supporting local artists in their craft, facilitating positive relationships between kids and with caring adults, and creating community through the gift of the arts. Currently there are six artists offering 14 different age-appropriate classes for kids 3 to 18 years old. Classes include: Paper Pizzazz, Sew and Stuff your own Animal, Wire Art Workshop, Drawing and Painting, Winter Fun Crafts, Leather Working Fun, Beauty and the Bead, Arts Around the World, Print-Paint-Play and Decorate your Sneakers. The Kid’s Art Academy is open to all children in the North Country simply for the artistic enrichment of kids in our community; there is absolutely no religious content to any of the classes. It is the church’s hope to provide this opportunity to any child who would wish it; scholarship money is available! Tuesday Classes Winter Fun Crafts Dates: Tuesdays January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 February 28 (Session I) We will make crafts appropriate for this age group. Some of the crafts include metal cut-outs, sock snowmen, absorbing designs, Valentine heart mobiles, time in a bottle, igloos and paper pizzas. Arts Around The World Dates: Tuesdays January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (Session I) This class is designed to introduce students to a variety of art projects that reflect cultures from around the world. Each class will focus on a different culture. From the masks of Africa, Australian boomerangs, to colored pencil French Repoussee, (pushing metal) metal journals and Italian marble frames; participants will create hands-on projects to enjoy Drawing & Painting (Session 1) Dates: Tuesdays January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (Session I) Join us in the studio! This is a class that will focus on 2-D work. Collage, drawing and painting methods will be introduced. With a variety of materials, you will express yourself through line, composition and design elements. Materials required by student: Please bring any drawing materials you would like to experiment with. Paper, colored pencils and charcoal will be provided. Drawing & Painting (Session 2) Dates: Tuesdays February 28, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (Session 2) Join us in the studio! This is a class that will focus on 2-D work. Collage, drawing and painting methods will be introduced. With a variety of materials, you will express yourself through line, composition and design elements. Materials required by student: Please bring any drawing materials you would like to experiment with. Paper, colored pencils and charcoal will be provided. Stuff Your Own Animal (Sessions 1 & 2) Dates: Tuesday January 10 - Penguin (Session 1) Each person gets to pick out their critter, stuff if, pick out a ribbon and hear a story about the critter. Paper Pizzazz Dates: Tuesdays March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (Session 2) Learn paper crafting - scrapbooking, card making, stamping, make-n-takes! Saturday Classes Wire Art Workshop Dates: Saturdays January 7 and 14 (Session 1) Materials provided by student: wire cutters and pliers labeled with name (can be found locally; contact instructor for specifics), hammer. All wire, beads and other materials provided by instructor. Make A Stuffed Bear Dates: Saturdays January 21 and 28 (Session 1) Must attend both days to finish bear. There will be a break for lunch (student brings their own). Please bring sewing scissors and sewing machine if possible; otherwise, they will be provided. All other materials provided. Print-Paint-Play Dates: Saturdays January 7, 14, 21, 28 and February 4 (Session 1) Join us in the studio! This is a class that will investigate materials in a playful and expressive way. Materials provided by student: Please bring a pencil. Paper, colored pencils, charcoal and paint will be provided. Dates: Saturdays March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (Session 2) Beauty And The Bead Dates: Saturdays March 3 and 10 (Session 2) This class is designed for the beginning jewelry artist. Students will learn the basics of beading and make a single strand necklace with a wide variety of beautiful glass beads. They will also learn how to finish it professionally. The second half of the class combines artful book marks with beaded artistic flare. Students to provide wire cutters and plier kit labeled with name. Leather Working Fun Dates: Saturdays March 3 and 10 (Session 2) This class will teach students the basics of leather working and Sneaker Design & Decoration (Younger) Date: Saturday March 31 (Session 2) Who says art has to hang on the wall? Paint a pair of sneakers any way you want! Decorate them, paint pictures on them, doodle on themthey are your own creations. The instructor will provide fabric paints, brushes, pictures to look at or copy and help figuring out the ideal design for your custom kicks. Sneaker Design & Decoration (Older) Date: Saturdays March 17 & March 24 (Session 2) Who says art has to hang on the wall? Paint a pair of sneakers any way you want! Decorate them, paint pictures on them, doodle on themthey are your own creations. The instructor will provide fabric paints, brushes, pictures to look at or copy and help figuring out the ideal design for your custom kicks. Children must know that they are a miracle, The Children’s Art Academy is open to all children in the North Country. Scholarship money is available and it is our hope to provide this opportunity to any child who would wish it.
